The priceless gift:
It was 7.30pm when the Day ended for Ahalya at the office. The days' were of 9hours duration in the office for a superintendent of a private limited company.
Return from office when the traffic turned out to be hectic was again tiring. It was a certain peculiar automation for the limbs as she boarded the metro train and alighted from it.
Most of the sub-lanes were silent. With homeward rushing feet, her mind too was in motion...What is there for dinner at home? Her son's PTA meeting to be attended. The unattended files in the office to be completed before the half yearly auditing. The medicines to be purchased for her ailing mother. To console her better half about the lagging transfer files...
With all thoughts in and out the mind....she did not realise that she had reached right in front of her house.
"Akka.....! A very familiar voice greeted her from near the gate. To her surprise, it was Malathi her old maid who used to look after her kid.
"Wow....You have grown into a young lady now Malathi. Come on ...what makes you come all the way here dear?"
"Akka.....remember the promise I had made to you long back...? She peered into my eyes...Ahalya couldn't register anything. She was busy warming up the food what was there in the kitchen. Malathi continued, Akka when will Arvind come back after his tuitions? I wanted to meet you and invite you to our house-warming.
Wow..! It's great Dear! We couldn't make one till this day! So you have kept your word by working hard to renovate your ruined hut.
Yes, Akka. As soon as I could do away with my PU with a low percentage, I didn't want to wait indefinitely until I could get a job. Instead, I started with a small mess which slowly became a catering unit. Akka it was all because of your blessings. So if I were not coming to you first to place the first invitation card in your hands, it would be a breaking of my promise to you when you had provided food and fees for me.
Keeping the card firmly in her hand, Malathi pulled out a small box with a pair of small ear-stud. akka...it's but imitation jewellery. But it's the one of your favourite design. Ahalya was rather awe-struck...! The two tiny garnet-studded ear-studs which were something that she loved! My dear child, I have just helped you out in small little ways....that doesn't deserve this level of honour dear!
